BRP Students get to see and learn about heroes who look like them and have pioneered the things on which they work. In some cases, they get to meet them!
Coding is connected to math, Math is connected to code and students learn the language of coding- how to talk about it, how to express themselves when they are having trouble, how to ask about things they want to learn. Their growth is collaborative as they are given agency in how they learn.
Consistent learning platforms: one of the major pitfalls of contemporary American education is companies using school systems as laboratories for curriculum- this used to be the domain of teachers. BRP uses two main platforms to teach coding- BitsBox and MicroBit. Both platforms teach Javascript, and Microbit additionally teaches Python and features a standalone computer chip that can be used for a variety of functions. One of the main reason for adopting these platforms six years ago is that they require typing in order to code. If your child is 'coding' and they are not typing, they are not fully coding.
We take the same approach with robotics and use consistent platforms, including building systems that are used in school system robotics, to teach our students. This prepares our students for participating in school robotics teams.
Repetition is key - having regular coding sessions that both build new skills while reinforcing typing skills and previous lessons creates a consistent discipline for students to follow that will carry over into their normal school work. This repetition is influenced by the Suzuki method for teaching musical instruments.
Active Student Engagement: We prioritize actively engaging students in the learning process, ensuring that they are not just passive recipients of information but are fully involved in their educational journey. Our approach includes soliciting feedback from students, parents, and partners, and using that input to continuously improve our tutoring services.
We aim to create a class culture based on our four virtues.
First session, parents and siblings are welcome to hang out, but
from that point forward, students need the space to develop their
connections to their peers in class.
There are different levels of experience in each class- if your child
feels they are being stifled, let us know so we can adjust their
learning path. While the process of collaborative learning is
critical to this class, it is also important to provide students with
challenges that allow everyone to see what is possible.
Students should be prepared to work and play. It is important that
joy is attached to this class, but that does not mean class is
playground or full on social hour. Help us set expectations for what
they will experience and they will get the most out of it.
